I've mentioned before that I'm starting an Australian collection. Does anyone know if Australian stamps have a Scott designation? Like if I got onto "Stamps2go" without a Scott or similar number there's no way I can find a stamp I'm looking for. Stamps2go lists all stamps by year, starting at the beginning. Collecting Aussies is fun, but sure not as easy as US.

In the Scott catalog, Australian stamps are in Volume 1 (which includes US/UN and A-B countries for current editions).

That is correct for a short period in the mid-1990s. Scott did some major rearrangements to the catalog sequence in the 1990s. Before and after then, Australia is in Volume 1 (no parts a/b).

I no longer have all the catalogs during the 1990s. However, from 1991 and earlier, Australia is in Volume 1. Volume 1 contained US/UN and British Commonwealth nations. While the rest of the volumes contained all the other countries in ABC order.

Sometime after 1991, I don't remember the exact year, Volume 1 became too bulky and Scott separated into 2 slimmer parts, Volume 1a and Volume 1b.

In 1998, Scott no longer kept a volume for British Commonwealth, and all the BC was mixed in with the rest of the world in ABC order. So from 1998 and onwards, Australia will be in Volume 1.

Are you still using catalogues that old? I don't even remember what year that would have been the last time that Australia was in volume 1b.
I'm curious now. Do you know? Anyone remember?

Well, thanks to khj, my question was answered while I was asking it. hehehe!
Thank you.

Hi Allan

Just a thought, if you are stuck on any of the Australian numbers, and you don't have a catalogue handy, send me an e-mail. Just put stamps in black stock pages, and scan them. I will send you back the numbers for them. I do that for other friends. It's usually done late at night, so you might not get them right away, but if it helps you, that's all that matters.
Oh, remember though that anything that has different watermarks and perfs, I can't do by just looking at photos. If there is only one or two like that, for example the roos, or George, I can give you a description of what watermark they could be, with a number for each one, but then you would have to check them out for yourself.

I don't mind doing this for anyone, for any country. I actually enjoy it. And if I can't find a certain stamp, I will let you know. I have all the 2010 catalogues, including the US specialized, plus the Unitrade catalogue for Canada.

Have a good day.

Wow! 1997 It seems like much longer ago then that. I've had 5 or 6 new sets of catalogues since then. Including the new 2010. I probably won't be getting anymore until at least 2012.

It was soooo nice when there were only 2 and then 4 catalogues. Every year I have to move something else on my bookshelf to make room for thicker and soon more catalogues. Oh well, I want them, so I can't complain.

Bye for now.

Thanks all for the help. Picked up an '05 catalog of Aussies. Working well since I don't care about $values. Some excellent sites on the internet also.

I use the 2005 Scott WW catalog as my checklist -- it's the last WW set in b/w that I can mark on easily with a color pencil.

I know you aren't concerned with catalog values, but thought you might be interested in knowing, the 'Roos and KGVs went up very roughly 60%-90% from 2005-2009, both mint and used. That's actually a pretty good jump for 5 years. Most of the pre-1930 stamps went up a decent percentage.

After that, various stamps went up, but those that went up were mostly modest increases (in absolute value terms, not percentage). Always a couple of exceptions here and there, of course. These are just generalized statements.

Enjoy your Aussie collection!

Great minds think alike...

Ditto on the 1997...my big checklist. anything after goes on a loose-leaf page after the country.

A lot of people don't realize that the old catalogs make for great checklists. Most WW collectors aren't going after all the WW recent issues -- that's what causes the bulkiness of the current catalogs.

I focus primarily on classic era, and was using a 1999 Scott classic 1840-1940 catalog as my checklist -- cost me $3, that's total cost.

I love old catalogs. Some contain info that Scott decided to remove over the years.

Another reason why I have little room left for air in my study room.

k

-- actually, I moved most of my old catalogs and other publications to a separate storage facility a few years ago to make room for... more stamps

Hello everyone......

For anyone interested....I have several old Scott catalogs available FREE but for the cost of shipping.

Going fast......if you'd like one of these let me know soon or they'll be gone.
1967 US Specialized
1969 the whole world in 1 book.

All are in usable but not the best condition......the 1969 has cover damage but the pages are decent.

Obviously the values are meaningless but for cataloging older items and general info these catalogs can still be useful.

If you're interested, send me an email.
