I came across this passport-sized folder among my father's loose worldwide holdings thought it was an interesting packaging concept.

I'm hoping one or more of the SCF Iceland collectors can provide me with some background on the product.

Steve

Hi tomiseksj.

While I am not particularly familiar with Icelandic stamps, I can tell you that the diplomatic corps of many countries offer stamps as gifts. Given that the cover is written in five different languages I would say that is exactly what you have. The benefit of such a gift is that it has no direct monetary value to the recipient and the stamps are miniature advertisements for the country.

I don't know either, but we can rule out a year set presentation packet, because more than one year is represented there, so I'd go along with gift or souvenir. The passing resemblance to a passport gives credence to smauggie's theory.

Now we can sit back and wait for someone who knows what they're talking about...

At the 1968 Hemisfair in San Antonio, TX, I remember several national pavilions selling specially packaged stamps in a variety of presentation folders. I wonder if this could be from some similar event.

This kind of thing is commonly a gift at UPU Congresses. I have a small collection of such books - you can find them on ebay with a search for "UPU presentation booklet" or some such string. Sometimes the booklet will contain printed titles describing exactly what it was for, but some countries are also lazy about it and simply hand out generic mini stockbooks.

tomiseksj: I can't provide anything specific re your Icelandic depiction but am reminded about some air mail first day covers I have in my collection. A salesman for a truck manufacturing plant in the U.S. would send U.S. first day covers to salesmen at their truck dealerships here in Canada. This was many decades ago but indirectly I ended up with a few of these covers. I guess they were both a thank-you as well as a promotional package
