The Temple of Hera, or Heraion, is an ancient Archaic Greek temple at Olympia. It was built in ca. 590 B.C. and was dedicated to Hera, queen of the Greek Gods. The temple, measured 18.75 x 50 m, had 40 Doric columns along the perimeter of the structure. In modern times, the torch of the Olympic flame is lit at this location.

Centenary of Sicily Stamps

Temple of the Dioscuri is one of the temples at the archaeological site in Agrigento, Sicily. It is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture. The four Doric columns and an entablature are 19th Century reconstructions. The original temple was 31 m x 13.4 m in size and was constructed in mid-5th Century B.C.

Centenary of Sicily Stamps

Temple of Apollo (550 B.C.) is one of the temples in the Greek arcopolis at Selinunte on the southwestern coast of Sicily. It had a peristyle (24 x 63.7 meters) with a total of 42 columns (8.6 m high). The fourteen of the seventeen columns on the north side of the temple were restored in 1925 - 1927.

The Jerash Temple of Artemis is a Roman temple in Jordan. Artemis, daughter of Zeus and sister of Apollo, was the patron goddess of Gerasa (Jerash). This Temple was built in 150 A.D. All but one of the 12 Corinthian columns in the front of the temple are still standing.

The Erechtheum is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. The Ionic-style marble temple was built between 421 and 406 B.C. The large porch on the north side of the temple is supported by six Ionic columns, and on the south, the famous Porch of the Maidens, is supported by six columns with draped female figures (caryatids).

The Persepolis Apadana belongs to the oldest phase of the city of Persepolis, built in the first half of the 6th Century B.C., as part of the original design by Darius the Great. The Apadana at Persepolis has a surface of 1000 square meters. Its roof was supported by 72 columns, each 24 meters tall. The walls of the spaces and stairs were carved with hundreds of relief figures, several of which illustrated peoples of various ethnicities bringing tribute to the Persian king.

The Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, a World Heritage site, is one of the best preserved and grandest Roman temple ruins in the world. The temple was commissioned by Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius and designed by an unknown architect. The period of construction is generally considered between 150 to 250 A.D. The temple is 66 m long and 35m wide. Its walls are adorned by forty-two unfluted Corinthian columns, nineteen of which remain upright in position standing 19 m high.

The Pravcická brána ("Pravcice Sandstone Gate"), located in the Bohemian Switzerland region of Czechia, is the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the arch, designed by Adolf Absolon (1937- ), combined engraved by Martin Srb (1954- ) and photogravure, and issued by Czech Republic on May 3, 1995 as one of a set of two stamps depicting natural beauties in the country, Scott No. 2957, plus a photo of the rock formation.

The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 B.C. by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was excavated in the early 20th Century, and a reconstruction using original bricks resides in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin.

Historical Peru - Saksaywaman Arch
August 6, 1970
Saksaywaman is a citadel on the northern outskirts of the city of Cuzco, Peru, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. The walls were built with large blocks of grey Yucay limestone. The blocks fitted together tightly without mortar. Saksaywaman and Cuzco were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983.

Bab al-Futuh (Conquest Gate) is one of three remaining gates in the walls of the Old City of Cairo. It was completed in 1087 A.D.
The flanking towers of the gate, 23 m from original ground level, have rounded fronts for stronger defense than the square towers. Each tower is decorated with an arched panel on the front and on the sides. Above this are three arrows slits in a rectangular panel, surrounded by a continuous molding over both towers.

The 400th Anniversary of Leon de los Aldamas, Guanajuato
January 20, 1976
The Lion Arch of Calzada is built to commemorate the independence of Mexico. The masonry structure with Doric columns was constructed in 1896. A sculpture of a 3 meter-long bronze lion in neoclassical style was added to the top of the arch in 1958.

The Temple of Bziza is a 2nd-Century Roman temple with three of its frontal columns still standing. The well-preserved temple is located in the northern village of Bziza 85 km from Beirut. The temple is 15 meters high and was built from limestone.
