Spain Monumental Arches and Gates January 2, 2012 The Puerta de Alcalá (Alcalá Gate) stands in the center of the Independence Square just outside of the Park of the Pleasant Retreat. This Neoclassical monument was commissioned by King Carlos III in the mid-18th century to replace the 16th century gate that served as the entrance to Madrid from what was then the eastern border.  |

Spain Monumental Arches and Gates January 2, 2012 Serranos Gate is one of the twelve gates that formed part of the ancient city wall (the Christian Wall) of the city of Valencia. It was built in Valencian Gothic style at the end of the 14th century. The walls consist of very solid stone and are covered with a cladding of limestone.  |
