Devil's Tower National Monument
September 24, 1956
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. It is an igneous intrusion in the Bear Lodge Mountain, above the Belle Fourche River, in northeastern Wyoming. Its erosion-resistant phonolite columns rise dramatically 386 m above the surrounding terrain.

Set of 40; one stamp features the Gateway Arch.
The Gateway Arch is a 192 m monument in St. Louis, Missouri, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary arch, it is the world's tallest arch. The Gateway Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947 and was built between February 1963 and October 1965. The monument opened to the public on June 10, 1967.

Gatastakkur is off the coast of Raudanes Point in the northeastern Iceland. Basalt magma erupted through rifts and engulfed sediments in its path. Over time, the sediments were eroded away, leaving a natural arch of basalt formation.

The high-denomination stamps show the Gateway to the Hall of Classics in Peking, which was the Imperial Academy of China since the Yuan Dynasty (1270 A.D.). It was replaced by the Imperial University of Peking during late Ching Dynasty (1905 A.D.).

Rock Formations - Organ Pipes

The Organ Pipes are jointed hexagonal-shaped columns formed by the cooling of basaltic lava during late Miocene. This outcrop rock formation is in the Mount Cargill outside the city of Dunedin, South Island.

Arch of Revolution

The Arch of the Revolution is located in Republican Square in downtown Mexico City. It is 67 m tall, and is considered the tallest triumphal arch in the world. It was built to commemorate the Mexican Revolution. The monument also serves as a mausoleum for five heroes of the Revolution in 1910.

The Arch of Trajan is an ancient Roman triumphal arch in Benevento, southern Italy. It was built in 114 AD to celebrate the extension of the Via Appia from Beneventum to Brundisium. On the front facing the city are narrated in relief scenes of good governance of the princeps and works for peace. On the external front, military scenes are depicted on the imperial politics of the provinces. The arc of the arch is adorned by the sacrifices made by Trajan for the opening of the street and the allocation of food to the rest of Italy.

Column of Julian stands in a square near the Genclik Park in Ankara. It was built in honor of Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate's visit to Ankara in 362 A.D. It was constructed by placing cylindrical flat bricks on top of each other. The 15 meter high column is usually topped by a stork's nest.

Sigismund Gate is the southeast entrance gate of the Bratislava Castle, a massive rectangular building standing on an isolated rocky hill directly above the Danube river in the middle of Bratislava. This 15th Century gate is the best preserved original part of the medieval structure.

The 34th stamp in the series depicts Nuestra Señora de la O (Church of Our Lady of O) in the city of Sanlucar de Barrameda, in the Province of Cadiz built in ca. 1360. The gate of this church is an excellent example of Mudejar art, particularly developed in architecture, consisted of the application to Christian buildings influences of Muslim Hispanic style due to the masonry of Andalusian tradition.

The Gate of Fort Garry
June 15, 1938
Fort Garry, also known as Upper Fort Garry, was at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in what is now downtown Winnipeg. It was established in 1822 and served as a trading post and administrative center for the Hudson's Bay Company throughout the mid-to-late 19th Century. In 1873, the city of Winnipeg was established and most of the fort was demolished. Only the main gate of Fort Garry remains today.

Arch of Trajan at Leptis Magna
Leptis Magna was a prominent city of the Roman Empire. Its ruins are located in Khoms, 130 km east of Tripoli, on the Mediterranean Sea coast. The site is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled Roman ruins in the North Africa region.
The Roman Emperor Trajan (98 - 117 A.D.) granted the Tripolitan city the rank of colonia, and the Lepcitanians dedicated an elegant honorific arch to express their gratitude to the Emperor.

Definitive Issue - Baalbek
September 1955
Baalbek is a town in the Anti-Lebanon foothills east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about 85 km northeast of Beirut. It possesses some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Lebanon, including one of the largest temples of the empire. The stamp shows the six remaining Aswan granite columns of the Temple of Jupiter (ca. 135 A.D.).

Djemila is the location of all that remains of the ancient Roman town of Cuicul. It is a small mountain village near the northern coast east of Algiers. Significant buildings in ancient Cuicul (1 - 7 Century A.D.) include a theater, two fora, temples, basilicas, arches, streets, and houses.
