I believe this is a Chile revenue, but am not sure. I could not find it in my Scotts catalog. Any information would be helpful. Thanks as always - Jeff

Yes, Chile revenue (Impuesto). That appears to be either the 1878 issue or the 1900 issue. Is the design 23mm (1878) or 22mm (1900) wide? It should be 31mm high in either instance. Both are listed as vermilion.

Each was a few centimes in 1915 (though the 1900 was 10c vs. 3c for the 1878).

Forbin doesn't say what the mm measurement measures...I assumed it was the design, but perhaps not? If it is the entire stamp, then I don't know whether you'd measure to the perf peaks or valleys. I suppose if the valleys are 23mm across, that would rule out 22mm...

anyone?

Hi

These stamp is effectively a revenue stamp, but it has a postal postmark.
Was printed in 1878 by American Bank Note Co.

In those years when some face value (in postage stamps) was sold out, it was authorized the use of revenue stamps for postal use.
In the stamp shown before the postmark indicates 18-FEB-1881
Even in your postmark the date is inverted in relation to circular frame (Iquique-Chile). Nice error !

This are the dates of use for the shown stamp:
11-27-1880 to 8-8-1881
4-21-1891 to 9-30-1891
1-20-1892 to 9-14-1892
10-25-1900 to 3-31-1901

Revenue stamps of 1900 are different. They have another design (face value in 4 corners) and were printed by Waterlow & Sons.
Like the first, were use in postal service too (1900-1901 and 1913 to 1915)

There is such a great archive of articles here, I certainly hope we can keep this site running indefinitely. Old posts like these just helped me identify a few tough stamps in a lot of South American stamps I just acquired.
