LZ 129 Hindenburg (Luftschiff Zeppelin #129; Registration: D-LZ 129) was a large German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume.
The airship flew from March 1936 until it was destroyed by fire 14 months later on May 6, 1937, at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey of its second season of service. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Manchester Township, New Jersey,USA. Hindenburg was named after the late Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934.

Hi, Trust everyone has had an enjoyable break over the holiday period and picked up some additional stamp beauties along the way. On my return I had several waiting for me in the mail box.
This one from Cuba is interesting. They were printed in 1935 to honor Christopher Columbus & the discovery of the Americas by the Columbine Society. However they were an unauthorised set. I had one each of the two lower values but was able to obtain a joined pair of each of the higher values via Cuba Postal. Still to identify the two different aircraft.
Next is a New Zealand CAL (Customised Advertising Labels). This was issued in 2012 in conjunction with the Blenheim stamp exhibition. Pleased to add this CAL to my aircraft collection. Most CALs are issued in limited numbers and quickly snapped up by collectors MNH. Not often you see them available for sale cancelled.
Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a pilot's head and an airplane, designed by Austrian artist and engraver Karl Sterrer (1885-1972), printed by typography, and issued by Austria on August 1, 1925, Scott No. C14.
Latest NZ Post issue - January 2015 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of TEAL. Pity I didn't have shares in the company! I purchased a set of the individual stamps plus this minisheet.
Yes, a nice shot of the Sunderland. This aircraft has featured on other NZ stamps in the past, a couple below. How this issue is to celebrate the 75th anniversary of TEAL.
Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting the Air Afrique DC-8-63 Fort Lamy taking off, designed by Jacques Combet, printed by photogravure (Delrieu), and issued by Chad on August 5, 1970, Scott No. C70, plus a photo of this commercial passenger jet at Charles de Gaulle Airport in 1980.
Some recent acquisitions from our monthly stamp club. We have a member who is a dealer and has a stall. Tempted with three albums of aircraft stamps he brought along for me to look at. Blew the budget a little (don't tell my wife!) My mother-in-law always told me the best way to deal with temptation was to yield to it and it goes away!
The Tupolev Tu-104, introduced in 1956, was a Soviet twin-engined medium-range narrow-body turbojet and the world's first successful jet airliner. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Tupolev Tu-104B, designed by Czech artist František Hudecek (1909-1990), combined engraved by Josef Hercík and photogravure, and issued by Czechoslovakia on May 25, 1963 as one of a set of two stamps commemorating the 40th anniversary of Czechoslovak Airlines, Scott No. 1178, plus a 1972 photo of a Tupolev Tu-104B in Aeroflot livery.
Quote: The Tupolev Tu-104, introduced in 1956, ... the world's first successful jet airliner.
Maybe the second successful jet airliner? Jane's Encyclopedia of Aviation credits the de Havilland D.H. 106 Comet as the first, having entered service on BOAC in May 1952.
DonSellos - I suppose the key word here is "successful." According to Wikipedia, "a year after entering commercial service the Comets began suffering problems, with three of them breaking up during mid-flight in well-publicised accidents."
Happy Birthday to Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (1923- ), a retired brigadier general in the United States Air Force and a record-setting test pilot who, in 1947, became the first pilot confirmed to have traveled faster than sound during level flight as he piloted a Bell X-1 experimental aircraft, which Yeager had nicknamed Glamorous Glennis for his wife. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Yeager's Bell X-1, designed by American artist Phil Jordan, printed by lithography, and issued by the USA on October 14, 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this achievement, Scott No. 3173, plus a photo of Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1, and a YouTube link to a video about this event.
Here are images of the six all-engraved airmail stamps in a set depicting Soviet-built passenger airliners, in Czechoslovak Airlines livery, flying over various Czechoslovakian castles, designed by Czech artist Jaroslav Lukavský (1924-1984), engraved by Ladislav Jirka (except as noted), and issued by Czechoslovakia on October 24, 1973 to commemorate 50 years of Czechoslovakian aviation, Scott Nos. C77-C82, plus photos of these aircraft.
