Hi guys

How can you tell a Scott #1 from a Scott #4.

Unitrade says.

1-#1 is 3d red...
2-#4 is 3d red...

People on here were able to tell me my stamp was a Scott #4...I have know idea how they came to that conclusion...Am I missing something very, very simple...???

I am lost.

Number 1 is laid paper and number 4 is wove paper. With the correct color, number 4 is much darker

Wert Check out this post about 2 large queens with some good pics of laid paper. Laid paper is very unique and easily identified by the strong vertical or horizontal lines formed in the paper making process. Once you actually have any stamp on Laid you will always recognize it. https://goscf.com/t/20714&SearchTerms=laid,paper

The laid paper is quite obvious, however, if those stamps were issued today, there would only be one number, and the others would be minor - either "a,b,c" or nothing in Scott, and i, ii, iii in Unitrade.

Similar examples would be the Caricature definitives of 1973. The easily distinguished ribbed paper don't even get a Scott listing, and get the "i, ii" numbers in Unitrade.

Well BeeSee as Coriandre and nitrolures alluded to, you probably can't trust classification by colour, as it may lighten or darken over the years.

I guess the only true indication is the type of paper...!

I will have to turn mine over and take a look at the back to see what you guys mean.
