My opinion:

Avoid this whenever possible.

If the stamp is sticking above the strip, it is usually overlapping the strip and stamp above it, which in theory can create a crease/'wrinkle'/line across the stamp. This chance is increased if the book is stored flat, and even more so if it is stored in a stack.

Interleaving helps minimize the chance for snagging a perf, but it doesn't eliminate the occurrences.

Try for full coverage.

My 2d.

In general, this will not be a problem when using stockbooks with either glassine or clear strips. In fact, it is general practice that the stamp is not completely enclosed by the strip.

On lower quality stockbooks, however, you do want to avoid the stamp protruding out beyond the bottom of the strip above. Sometimes, it will produce a minor bend in the stamp if you aren't rigorous in your stockbook storage procedure and leave it stored flat for an extended period of time. This is usually not a problem with brand-name or better quality stockbooks.

One of the differences between using stockbooks and stockpages is related to your question. When using stockpages (e.g., Varios), it is usually preferred to have the stamp completely enclosed by the strip, but I've seen plenty of collections in which this is not the case. I rarely see stockbooks in which the stamps are completely enclosed by the strip. With stockpages, NEVER allow the stamp to extend beyond the bottom of the strip above. It WILL produce a bend (sometimes even a mark in gummed stamps) over time.

With stockbooks, you usually don't have much choice when it comes to stamps sticking out. You'd be hard pressed to find a stockbook with strips tall enough to completely cover the size of typical vertical-oriented commemorative stamps. They do exist, but are not easily found, and will really bulk up your collection because you will have far fewer strips per page.

I agree with k. The stockbooks with the glassine strips that are spaced apart from each other are just intended to hold the stamps, and not cover them completely...same with manila pages.

If you are using those, it would be unrealistic to expect full coverage (unless you are collecting Berlin's blue fleas, I suppose).

My answer applies to those pages where the top of one strip (the opening) is immediately underneath the bottom of the strip above, with almost no gap. In those pages, anything sticking out is almost by definition overlapping the strip above.

Odd sized or pair of stamps etc than stick out I put into mounts with closed end at the top to enclose everything, then into the album strips.

Hi tikithindi,

I am gradually moving away from stock books because of the points you raise, and also because of the danger of damaging a stamp when placing it behind the glassine strip. I now use the Prinz double sided black 22 hole punched stock pages. They have clear strips in a variety of sizes and come in packs of 10. Easy to accommodate full cover of anything from single stamps to blocks, mini-sheets and covers. No interleaving needed. Might cost a bit more but that is balanced by better storage and presentation, and also I have become a lot more selective about what I buy and the stuff I keep from lots bought.

Hi

My friend, who is a stamp dealer, has had a stamp, or two, "cut" at where the strip top met the stamp. The stock sheets are in a tari-fold. From then on any stamp that is to protrude above the stock sheet strip is placed in a mount and then placed in the stock sheet. Used mounts that are gleaned from collections, or whatever, are used.

Thank you all for answering, you releived my much grief cjd and khj.
I am using aprt from Glassine envelopes and books and Stockbooks recently started Vario Stocksheets. In the stockbook temp before I organize in stocksheets. In putting stamps in stocksheets I was paronoid about stamp sticking out even a mm, I go next higher strip Stocksheet thinking it is better to have mm or more inside the strip to protect stamp better. Last two weeks was thinking to ask this question but thought it a silly question.

Thanks cjd and khj and all others appreciate very much.
