Just updated my scott volume I from 2008 to 2014 and noticed that the Australia KGV #71a was identified as a 2p type II in 2008 and in 2014 71a is a Type I tete beche pair. I assume in one of the years between 2008 and 2014 there was an update. Does anyone have any info on what happened to the Type II? Is it a major number now that I overlooked?

It turns out Scott made several errors over the years regarding the change in this listing, so it took me a while to figure out what happened.

In a nutshell, the old Australia #71a is supposed to be #71b, which as you have noticed, is missing!

If you have time, you can email the Scott catalog editor about the omission.

Now for the long story...

The changes were made in the 2011 catalog, but several errors occurred so that the change was messed up. According to the list of catalog number changes in the 2011 catalog, old Tasmania #71a is renumbered #71b and there is a new Tasmania #71a. Of course, the 1st error is that the change occurred for Australia, not Tasmania. There were no changes to the Tasmania #71 listings/sub-listings. The 2nd error was that they put in a new Australia #71a, but they forgot to move the old Australia #71a to #71b and apparently simply deleted it.

At least, that's my conclusion regarding what may have happened. It would not be the first time that Scott renumbered a listing, messed it up, and did not have the error corrected until years later.

Thanks, khj. I now completely do not understand why the catalogs went up in price, nothing new just new errors in the listings.

The other 'error' that I found was changing to a 0.25 minimum catalog value. Maybe on MNH hinged stuff that has a minimum 0.30 face value but used issues that you could wallpaper your house with, never.

The Tete-Beche pair was first reported in 1931 in a booklet only 1 recorded valued at $250000.
