Would anyone know the Co-ordinates on google for the Bromo Kentucky - I am trying to plot the following cover on the Postmark wiki but cannot find it anywhere other than it is in Rockcastle County.

I will pass on the info. Another we are having trouble finding is BOUTY, KY - another PO that is closed but as above we are looking for the co-ordinates for where it would've been when open.

LarryBruce thank you for your time - it is much appreciated.

You might want to look at older maps for that area. Sanborn insurance maps are a possible source and if you need to go back even more try Beers Atlas maps. Some of these types of maps are available through Ancestry.com if you have a membership or they will be located at the local or state historical society/library. Some college libraries have them online as well - University of Kentucky Library perhaps?

If you an find an old road map of Rockcastle County, Bromo was located on route 29543 in 1939.

Thanks for the info :

We have posted it where we think until we get more concise information.

We have run into a few but this one completely seems to have zero info on it.

StampStudy: Your map is off - the town is further west. Bromo is located southwest of the town of Spiro, modern day rt 618, Quail Road. Sometimes Google maps are not that great. Try Yahoo Maps instead. Bromo can be found there.

Bouty, Kentucky is located on rt. 478 between Duck Run and Redbird, west of I-75. Again, Yahoo Maps found it, Google did not.

Brilliant - I will remember Yahoo Maps in the future.

I have updated both on the Postmark Wiki - many thanks.

Although the above coordinates for Bromo, KY appears to be just right, I was surprised to find reference to that "town" in a 1999 map of the area:

The complete map may be found at this link:

They are very much "fun" and interesting to postal history collectors but sadly today's ink jet "regional" postmarks have all but done away with the collecting discipline unless, of course, you find some handstamped examples that are still occasionally made at a local post office, although most modern day usage typically means that a post office meter is affixed to show the date and location of acceptance at a given office rather than using an "old fashioned" rubber stamp.
