Hello SCF,

So I just started my admiral set. I'm missing the coils and the war tax over prints.
I have a question for checking forgeries. I know the perf. 12 Horizontals are all done with wet printing. Is this the case with all other coils?

Its unclear with the two references I use online.

http://www.bnaps.org/ore/VanSomeren...ps-Fakes.htm
http://www.rpsc.org/Library/admiral/admiral.htm

Anyone have better references? Tomorrow I will try to fire up some scans of the coils I picked up in a few lots bought. I'm looking to use these as studies to learn how to tell a fake from genuine.

Also, how many posts are need till you can trade on here?

Thank You,
Joe

Hello Joseph,

I have the Unitrade catalog, and it indicates that the Perf 8 Vertical admirals are available in both dry and wet printings. 1c orange-yellow Die I and II in Dry, Die I in Wet. 2c Green in wet and dry, 3c Carmine Die I in Wet, Die II in dry.

I hope this helps. I still have no idea how to tell them apart.

Edit: I think most trading is done in the appropriate forum after 50 quality posts. Easy to get there ... just post some nice pictures/questions/answers and you're there before you know it.

Thank you Partime,
I need to still pickup a Unitrade. I'm still going off my 2009 scotts guide and what I find on the net. I have a few I know are trimmed or I'm pretty sure are. Your right though they are very tough to tell apart.

Thanks,
Joe

The same article by Randall W. Van Someren referred to in the initial post also has tables listing the wet and dry printings that exist on sheet stamps, coils, and booklets. See:

http://www.bnaps.org/ore/VanSomeren...-Formats.htm

Scroll down to the bottom to view the tables.

Other parts of the article describe how to distinguish between wet and dry printings and also how to distinguish between Dies I and II for those stamps printed from two dies.

I am not a Scott-basher, but you really need Unitrade if you want to collect Canada seriously.

If you are serious about admirals you might also want to consider getting a copy of George Marler's book The Admiral Issue of Canada.
More than you will EVER want to know about the stamp.

Thanks Everyone! I just Ordered my Unitrade. Jamesw is this available for purchase in PDF anywhere? Also, I'm firing up the scanner to load the coils. I'll post the ones I think fake first and then the ones I think are genuine. If I'm wrong please cratique me so I can learn how to spot the fakes quickly. I feel that most 12 perf Horizontals are fake since only 50,000 of each where ever released.

SO here is Perf 8 vert. Dry print I think its been trimmed on the top. Which doesn't make sense being only $1 stamp in catalog value.

Looks vertical to me

Sides and top of both of your last examples look good to me. Not the best centering on the 1c green, but the width looks within tolerances.

Yes it is vertical.
Okay thats good to know 1c green is good I was worried I wasted $4 on ebay. I know for the centering I might have overpaid a little. Good to know they are more than likely the real deal.
More to come.

So here is the nicest I think I have on centering in what I feel is genuine maybe a VF. Green(maybe the drk green but looks green to me) 2c 8 vert perf. coil dry print. The cancel is light and color is pretty decent. I think a short perf or two.

Here is the whole group.

I really like the two 1c 8 vert. perf coils. One is bright green color variety and the other has decent centering with a half cancel showing. Anyone have admiral coils they would like to share. I would love to see them.

Hi Joseph. I don't know if Marler is available in pdf. It was published by the American Philatelic Society in 1982. You might try contacting them and enquire. Otherwise you'll be looking at ebay, Amazon or you local used book store.

Here's an image of the cover of my copy. Also available in soft cover. Was lucky to get this at my club auction last year for a very decent price ($10!)
