I'm having trouble locating these in the guide. If someone has a Sc# for them it's appreciated. Thanks.

Your Cuba is Sc 248 from 1911.
I'm going to have to come back to the Panamas. Maybe someone else can chime in the meantime... |

Thanks Cjd. I guess that Cuba was right under my nose... :)
I think those Columbia's could be Panama Airmail? Can anyone confirm? The album they were in had them in Columbia under "Columbia - Panamas." ..It's an old album... |

I don't have a catalogue right at hand but check the first twenty or so listings of Panama and you should find them. I'll be back to a catalogue in the morning, if they don't pop up for you. |

Thanks redwoodrandy. I had a buddy in high school named Randy and his nickname was red or redwood. :)
So, can anyone explain why the larger paper on the lower/left Panama stamp? |

Possibly because it is a bottom margin stamp. The banknote printers ( American, in this case, I think ) left a little extra space around the outer rows of stamps on the sheets, to help compenstate for paper shrinkage, as I understand it. If I'm incorrect ( I hate saying I'm wrong ), we'll soon be told. |

Hi JessEm
Pet peeve of mine, it is spelled COlombia with an O not U. Anyways, at one time Panama was a department (state) of Colombia. The stamps shown are from the department of Panama. When the US needed permission to build the Panama canal, Colombia did not give permission so the US helped the Panamanians to split from Colombia and become the independent country of Panama. The same Colombian stamps were used except they were overprinted Panama in various configurations.
The stamps should be listed at the back of Colombia along with stamps from the departments of Antioquia, Boyaca, Bolivar, etc.. However, in Scott's inimitable way they are listed in Panama, Scott 8-21.
The 5c is Scott 10, black on bluish paper. The 50c depends on the paper. Regular paper is Scott 13, Pelure paper is Scott 14 and wove paper Scott 20.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for pointing out the Colombia mistake. I will try not to let it happen again :). The info you provided there is interesting. Not just about the stamps, but the sidebar about Scott as well. That does explain why I did not find them in the catalog initially. |
