Good if you want to read biographies and obituaries of dealers. Overall, I'd say content is 90% for dealers; 10% for collectors.
Of course, others here, may disagree. Let's give them time to weigh in.... |

I like it. Oriented towards dealers, but plenty of interesting articles for the collector. |

I think it is... Good articles that are targeted at more advanced collectors than you typically see in Linns or APS. |

It is the best magazine for personalized articles about the past and present people of our hobby. There is a good cross-section of articles to me. There is a regular article about Confederate Philately, another about Michael Roger's musings from his long career, another which are usually general ramblings from a longtime collector of worldwide covers, his experiences at shows, etc. Another regular article is tips on exhibiting (more advanced), articles on other subjects include 19th C. US postal history subjects, usually a couple (or more) from Editor Randy Neil about shows, observations about the hobby in general, etc, another by a longtime US stamp dealer which usually focuses on one area, such as the bluish papers, or coil stamps, etc and John Dunn writes a regular "last page" article with his personal feelings about the hobby.
It was ASD&C which invited Don and I to write our article about Stamp Smarter. If I had more time, I would write more for them. I absolutely recommend it to all readers. You will enjoy the magazine IMO. It has lots of content. High quality printing, a great Editor, etc.**

I think what I am going to do is write to them and ask for an old copy. On the surface it sounds pretty good. |

I joined a few years ago and very much enjoy the magazine (I am not a dealer). The past 5 or so issues each have had an article about past International Philatelic Exhibitions which were interesting. As Bill points out, many articles describe the "heyday" years of stamp collecting which I find fun to read. Also, many informative articles on varied aspects of collecting that are new to me (last issue had articles on Free Franks and Essay/Proof collecting). Well worth the money IMO. |

I got the same offer and subscribed today, having previously seen back issues at shows and dealers. I'm bracing for junk mail, though. It appears to have been a mass solicitation, and both the cover letter and reply form urge you to provide your e-mail address, which I didn't. A teaser price like this always serves as a means to harvest addresses; I just hope some of the burst of mail in the next few months will be relevant. |

As a recent returnee to collecting, I decided to subscribe to ASD&C as well as to the Linns publications and the APS monthly magazine just to absorb as much information as possible. Although there are a fair number of ads (not surprisingly), I find the ASD&C to be the most readable and informative, both in terms of the regular columns and the more in-depth articles. Although the pieces on old time dealers and stalwarts of the philatelic world from days gone by don't register as much to me as a newbie, they still constitute interesting historical background. I have not been bombarded by either junk snail mail or email - just the occasional solicitation which I don't mind since it affords the opportunity to check out new sources of material. |

The articles I have read have been well written and very informative. For the collector, it gives you a rare insight into the philatelic knowledge of a dealer; one you may not get exposed to by simply talking to him/her at a stamp show. Most dealers were collectors first, and many still sell to support their hobby. Dealers have presented some great information in the articles. A recent article on the Civil War earlier this year was excellent. I also enjoy Mike Roger's ramblings . Bottom line: it's worth the investment. Even if your not a dealer, a collector will learn interesting things on how the industry works. As for the writing -level, I think it's better than Linn's. |

Of all the stamp magazines and journals I receive, I tend to spend the most time reading this one. IMHO, it's a great magazine and worth the money. And I'm not a dealer and never have been. |

Following up on this discussion, I would be interested in acquiring back issues of this magazine. Would anyone have any that they would like to part with or have any advice on where I may be able to find same? Thanks. |
