This one has been in a stock book for a few years. I was hoping to see one, or something like this one somewhere along the line, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated. The stamp is line perforated 14.5, and is unwatermarked as far as I can see. The design is approximately 22mm x 18mm.

Bookbndrbob,
Luckily this gave me a chance to try out my recently purchased "Linns Stamp Identifier" book. It led me to the Dominican Republic and you have a Postage Due Stamp from the first series in 1901. (Scott #J2). (A watermarked version would be #J6 - crosses and circles in the watermark)
Minimal value unfortunately but at least you now know what you have.
Edited: I took the photo to be olive gray, if the color is Olive Green you would then have J10 (with a watermark). Hobsun |

Interesting, as this is one of the few instances outside stamps of Great Britain where the country name isn't on the stamp. Neat piece of identification! |

Tim H, that is only for postage stamps! Postage due stamps do not need to have the country name on it if I remember this correctly!

Hobsun,
Nice detective work! Does the Linn identifier list details for British Commonwealth stamps as well? Those tricky stamp designers trying to drive collectors crazy!

dcarz1949,
I will answer by giving you a sense of the content of the book and let you decide. I think you would find this helpful but it has its limitations.
The Linns Identifier contains two primary sections. The first section (48 pages) is an alphabetical listing of a very comprehensive list of all the inscriptions/text/characters that may appear on a stamp. You simply find the set of characters that appear on your stamp and it lists possible countries and type of stamp. It does not give actual catalogue numbers but provides clues to help you find it. In the case of the above stamp, I simply looked up the single letter "T" and it offered the following: - overprint in circle, stamps of peru, Huacho provisional - in each corner of stamp, Dominican republic, postage due - with monetary unit "F" and heraldic lion - Belgian postage due
This section also contains Cyrllic and Greek inscriptions.
The second section contains photos of stamps (nearly 1000) that could be hard to identify. It covers head and numerals, Cyrillic, Greek, Asian, and Arabic inscriptions, Eastern European languages, surcharges, overprints and many more. These are all broken into categories to help you find at least a similar stamp. In most cases these photos actually identify the Scott # as well. This section also contains some examples of revenues, locals, surcharges, cinderellas, seals and labels. (Note: These final sections are not comprehensive by any means but provide a good deal of those items that one would commonly find in older collections).
The photo section is very much like the Illustrated identification section found in the back of the Scott catalogues but much more robust with many more stamps and categories. The alphabetical text portion (which I find the most helpful) is similar in nature to a section found in the Linns World Stamp Almanac (Millennium edition). That book is rather big and bulky book while this book is small and has a significant amount of additional entries to help.
Obviously I like the book and for $13 it seemed a no brainer to me. I am not an avid world wide collector but when I have something I want to know what it is and this has provided the answer on many occasions.
Hope that helps Hobsun013 |
