I will let this boards experts make the decision. Notice that the "S" in "British" is missing. Forgery or rarity?

my guess is that it is a forgery

Van ---First I could not find anything about a missing "S" in the overprint . Second on your copy the "frica" of AFRICA is too large in your overprint . The curve at the top of the "E" in EAST should be more straight downward . Hope this helps .

Thank you floortrader.

"British" in the overprint is actually "Britih" (no "s"). My mistake for not clarifying where the faux pas was located.

Gibbons note that the overprint was handstamped on all values, and no varieties of spelling have been recorded - but that 'Forgeries exist.'

I think we can conclude that the stamp is a forgery.

I'll go with Tony. Minns (in his Handbook of British East Africa philately) doesn't list this. Definitely forgery. Also, the cancel is wrong for British East Africa, where a double-ring or a "killer" squared circle were used exclusively.

As I thought, it is probably a forgery. Seems kind of ironic that someone took some amount of time to create a forgery but forgot how to spell "British". The perfs do look funny and to me look like they were "repunched" especially down the right side where they seem to be angled to the frame of the stamp. Thanks to all, especially the note about the cancels used in BEA.
