Is there any correlation to the numbers that appear on clear stamp mount items for sale to the size of the stamps they can be used for? Does anybody have a list or website as to what all the numbers on a stamp mount item mean?

The listed height of a stamp mount is for stamps of that height. In other words, a 40x26mm mount is meant for a stamp 40mm wide by 26mm high. The actual mount itself will be wider and higher than that. You'll see some mounts listed as 215x25mm, for example, and these are strips that are meant to be cut to size for individual stamps. Buying strips gives you a lower cost per mount, but of course you have the hassle of cutting them.

The numbers are sometimes just listings for a particular size. If you would like a list of Scott/Prinz mounts please go to http://globalstamps.com .

Mystic mounts and strips are a bit cheaper. On boxes of mounts they have an exact size picture of a typical stamp it will fit. Packages of strips have the size in total of the strip, not the size of the stamp it will fit. The math is easy, but I usually get it wrong, so I often buy Prinz strips. Big number is height of the stamp it will fit. Metric, of course.

As a general rule of thumb, most small-sized definitive stamps are about 25-26mm high. Most standard-sized horizontal commemoratives are also about that height. Most standard-sized vertical commemoratives are 40-41 or so mm high. I like to use this handy perforation gauge ($2.39 delivered on ebay) which contains a mount sizing gauge on the back. That elimates the guesswork as to which size mount is necessary. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Showgard-60...AMXQHDlRbsaw

Here's another gauge that you can print out:

https://www.showgard.com/Sizeguides...%20gauge.pdf

I've always found it accurate but your mileage my vary - so confirm it's accuracy after you print it.

iHobb has a listing of U.S. stamps and corresponding mount sizes also:

http://www.ihobb.com/c/SHOWGARD_MOUNTFINDER.html

Between the Global and iHobb lists you should be able to find all the U.S. if that is what you are looking for.
