I just ran across this stamp on cover. It appears to be a double transfer in the bottom label lettering and grid. Also, the outer right frame line towards the bottom appears to have a slight jog.

Opinions please if this is a doubel transfer...thanks!

This is a normal copy taken from Swedish Tiger for comparison.

OK, thanks..looks like the normal stamp to me. If anyone has a double transfer copy, I'd love to see what it looks like

Where exactly do you see the double transfer? Arfken's article on the 5¢ Columbian stamp that was published in 1988 in the Chronicle (#139, August 1988) mentions the existence of double transfers on the Scott 234, but does not illustrate an example nor cite an article to back up his statement. Many other values of the series have double transfers so it is possible to find one on the 5¢ value. While the Scott Catalogue notes and prices a double transfer on an unused stamp, neither Lauzon (The United States Columbian Issue - published in 1942) nor Brookman Volume III (published in 1967) note the existence. It appears that an illustration is elusive.

I collect machine cancel and U58 and U59 Covers, Stamp errors are not my specialty. I looked for a reference photo of a double transfer and could not find one. I never have collected or studied these issues but when I was examining this cover, the horizontal lines on the top and bottom of the letters in the bottom label looked suspicious as well as the dark grid. Now that I've seen the post from redwoodrandy, I don't believe it is a double transfer.

I do not see a double transfer here. I collect double transfers so I am used to looking for them. I have not seen one on the 5 cent so far, only the two and ten cent values. The two cent has some truly huge double transfers.

I have a mint example and a used example of the same overall double transfer on the 5c Columbian. They are far more elusive than the catalog would suggest. Here is a scan of the mint example. Notice virtually everything is doubled, but most prominently in the letters and numerals. I'll upload a photo of the used example for comparison if there is interest in another example.

Nice stamp Crouse!! I think DTs are cool but hate it when the DT is barely discernible. Your 5c DT as Randy points out is "striking". Well done and good find!

Crouse27, are you sure that's a double transfer and not a kiss print/kiss impression? Does your used example match "exactly"?

Crouse27, I believe that I owned this stamp at one time and it had a PF Cert that indicated this was a Kiss Print. I thought it was a DT as well. The image does match exactly if I recall.

When I started this post I did not realized this stamp was so controversial and difficult to identify properly. If so, why does Scott value it so low? Sometimes I wonder about Scott valuations but I guess that's another topic.

It's probably a kiss print since you can see a glimpse of the imprint along the bottom and it shows signs of doubling as well.

I looked up Kiss Print on line and found this site - http://www.re-entries.com/terms.html#kiss. Seems like a "kiss print" is more of a smear than doubling as seen on this columbian.

Is there doubling in the central vignette portion of the stamp? It does not seem that there is from the scan; that would make a kiss print very unlikely.
