hi, hope you can help me:

1. the perry 90.:
i think it is a 166 based on color, what you think?
the missing perf-punch looks strange to me, is it a re-perf mistake (that would be super dumb) or can this occur?
2. the 10 Jefferson:
is it a H or I grill? so basically is it a 139 or 139A?

thank you for your help!

I can't see the grill on the 10 cent, so no comment. Based on the thickness of the paper and the later 19th century cancel, I would say the 90 cent is a Scott 191 and possibly reperfed by hand (one hole at a time) at bottom.

Although the stamps are printed on in watermarked paper, a dip in watermarking fluid will show faults or repairs. Possibly show the grill better.

isn't it like that that the I grills are always very strong, nearly always going through the paper, while the H grills aren't, and so this faint grill must be a H grill?

---
PS. no sorry, those were the J grills which are that strong. so in case of this 10c, it's a H grill until it's a clear I grill, which would need a better photo with oblique light.

Is that how you got the image of the larger part of the 89 split E grill?

The grill is likely a late state H grill. Late state I grills tend to be reasonably complete and rectangular while early state I grills may have only one complete vertical row of points. H grills are often incomplete. Please read the notes in a recent Scott US Specialized catalogs about H and I grill sizes and paper mesh (grain) as correlated with early or late state H or I grills. Also be aware that many fakes of bank note grills exist.
