The seller was based in Kurdistan (first ID), now in Sweden but location is Little Rock Arkansas. A bit strange. A bit cartel like.

Regarding this example here shown, Bill Weiss stated "No opinion whether cancel is genuine".

Does anyone here have an opinion regarding this example? What type of cancel, city, etc, does it appear it may be?

Small nick at top?

Anyhow... on to the OP... The chances of that stamp being a legit used example are up there with a Sasquatch mating successfully with Godzilla.

You do NOT buy a used #39 without a PF Cert or on extension for one. The Chronicle had an article on the number of #39s submitted to the PF and the number of fault free and legitimately used ones was quite small.

Also that stamp on ebay has been reperfed all over the place.

OP: Close to 0% being genuine In fact, the underlying stamp is questionable to me -- a very poor scan compared to other items offered by the seller. rogdcam's suspicions hold up; there are other items being offered that are cartel-like fakes, like their mint #72 for sale.

"No opinion" cert example: There are just a couple of examples known used from smaller towns, but the stamps were probably only available at the large city post offices listed by Swedish Tiger. Aside from a fake cancel, there are probably devices around that were stolen or lost during the Civil War. So even if one could figure out the town, you'd have to know the cancelling device history. I also get a different partial read from the stamp scan and the cert photo.

Worth a couple three hundred bucks, if you're into faked material, cancels or otherwise. Oh, that's WITHOUT discounting for the many flaws and non-centering.

An expensive space-filler at $100, but there will always be someone willing to buy crappy/faulty high-end, scarce stamps. Better to pass on this type item and save up to buy quality material.

oh and at least it has a respectable (if ambiguous) cert. Someone will always hope they can resubmit and "upgrade" it.

I admit it is a train wreck condition wise, with numerous significant thins. Yes the cert is too kind regarding the condition.

But it is a position piece, which I am always interested in finding a better example.
