Postively 528B...
Just a second's glance reveals the most telling offset characteristics...
Bright white scalp with far less hairlines than flat press 1 or 1a and deep thick eyebrow hooking over the nose... |

The slanted vertical hatch lines of the toga's top front edge are uniform and clear in their entirety. 500. |

Sorry, rogdcam, you're wrong. This is offset printing. The impression & shade characteristics are immediately recognizable. The "microscope" photos confirm this is not an engraved printing. |

At first glance I said that "I could be wrong that it is a # 500". I would like to change my vote to it being a 528B and admit that my level of expertise is on the low side. I do try to learn something new every day! edit; I spelled expertise incorrectly. |

Srailkb - What was the purpose of your comment other than to be rude, snarky and condescending? Disagreeing with me is one thing but simply being arrogant and nasty is another. Sad |

Despite the small percentage of the image devoted to the stamp, the stamp pictured above is a type Ia Scott 500. I have more than enough experience with this stamp having found about 90 examples in mix over the years.
I have to support srailkb. I have had to walk away from the keyboard many times after reading some of the random guesses posted here. Although, this is not the worst. I wish posters who point out the stamp smarter/1847usa web site would show that they have used it by posting an answer along with the link. I am not sure that neophyte stamp collectors would be able to follow the 1847usa web site without some previous exposure to philatelic conventions and terminology.
Finally, I recommend that posters who gave the wrong answer above consider signing up for the American Philatelic Society Washington/Franklin course at Summer Seminar in Bellefonte, PA in June. There is nothing wrong with making a mistake unless it is repeated over and over. |

Quote: Does the 528B have a watermark? No... Offset printed stamps were printed on unwatermarked paper as was the 500... watermarking ended on Washington Franklins @ #461 |
