I've followed this thread with some interest, being the President of our local stamp club. I mention this because one of the biggest problems local clubs - and even national organizations - are having is recruiting members, enticing them, cajoling them, trying everything we can to bring them in.
As collectors, rogdcam is right - we need to do whatever we can to BETTER the hobby. This is the only way we, who truly value the hobby, can make a difference. We HAVE to have a united stand on certain ideals, otherwise, the problem will just continue to destroy the hobby.
Let's look at YoP for a moment. Here's someone who decided to take a big plunge, as someone said "into the deep end," investing a large sum of money. As an absolute novice, not knowing where else to go, he chose
ebay. Unfortunately, he chose the wrong seller. Now, he's not just not a collector, he's a negative against collecting because of his experience. How many potential collectors will he turn away when he explains what has happened to him? Perhaps those potential future collectors who would have purchased your collection or mine when we decide to divest ourselves of them.
Rhett touched upon this idea as well.
What we, as collectors, and for many of us, knowledgeable collectors, should never abide are the crooks, shysters and hucksters who are peddling fraud. I don't care whether there may be "good deals to be had" because it's an area "outside of their wheelhouse," when someone knowingly supports one of these bad characters, they are giving them their imprimatur of acceptance and helping to fund their continued operation. Is finding that "good deal" really worth doing that?
Word of mouth, or in this digital age, electronically transmitted rants, by disgruntled and angered individuals will help destroy this hobby faster than we, as collectors, or the national organizations such as the APS and ASDA, can correct that impression.
I wonder how many people have looked at this thread who are not members, just browsing, and then decided stamps are just not a safe enough hobby to involved with?
So, what CAN we do?
(1) Report the problem to ASDA and APS, formally. EACH OF US. The more they hear about it, the more likely someone will see it as the threat it is.
(2) Adamantly refuse to support the "dodgy" sellers who are hawking this spurious material - COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY refuse to buy ANYTHING from them.
(3) Work to help others. This forum, along with Stampsmarter and other website are a start.
(4) For those of you who are experts in your areas, please try to remember you weren't born with that knowledge, that you had to learn it along the way. Perhaps you were fortunate enough to have a couple of great mentors. Maybe you had to do it all yourself, reading and researching. Either way, someone was there to help you, whether it was a live mentor or the philatelists who authored the materials you've used. It's time to give back.
It's time to start now...
