If I remember correctly, hasn't the operator of SB had his own issues and is far from a saint?

I don't know about issues specifically (at least none that I can discuss publicly), but he is a howling bigot that loathes Americans. He's also a raging bully. I rarely participate there.

I was aware of his fondness for Americans. Your other favorite personality, KL, could fill us in.

I was a member of the 'down under' forum for a while but left after a dust up with GS over copyrighted images he posted without permission. When I asked about them he basically told me that he does whatever he wants. The images in question were the Prince William and Kate Middleton naked images, material I also felt was not suitable for a stamp hobby forum. While I never mentioned that issue, I certainly would not recommend a stamp forum where the owner posts nude celebrity images. But I understand and concur that there are some good posters fighting fraud and posting informative posts. I would not recommend a stamp forum to younger people if the owner thinks posting naked images of women is acceptable.

And then there is the issue with the personal attacks and insults. Clearly this has been an ongoing issues for years with a large amount hobbyists maintaining negative opinions towards that forum. This is another reason that the good value that can be found there is not being seen by as many people as it deserves.

Moving back to the thread's primary topic… it was pointed out to me, and it is a good point, that ebay Trust & Safety is divided into the same organization as the rest of the ebay subsidiaries. So even if someone might get some ebay Trust & Safety to react in one country, it is NOT an enterprise wide result. ebay Trust & Safety in GB is a different subsidiary than the ebay Trust & Safety in AU, and they are all different than the US Trust & Safety group.

Lastly, I would like to make a point about this thread. I agree that the OP was not fully forthcoming when he started the thread. Posting that he was offered a refund should have been disclosed upfront. If a seller provides a refund (based upon whatever terms and conditions are in place regarding restocking fee, time limits, etc.) then the seller has fulfilled his end of the transaction.

But I do not agree that ebay should have removed the negative feedback, the buyers negative feedback should have been left in place and the seller's explanation of the refund being offered should have also been published by ebay. Then future buyers could make informed decisions based upon this history. Whitewashing the feedback only served to undermine the value of the feedback system and makes people even more leery of the entire situation.

Allying yourself with the likes of GS is probably not much better than buying from Anthony's, even if you are getting the better of them. As I recall, GS and another individual had a hand in corrupting a minor. Nice guy...

I will not discuss SB here due to my relationships there. I believe I am the only American moderator on SB. There are a few from Canada but as far as I know I'm the only American. Back to the purpose of this thread. IMHO it's a shame that this thread went in the direction it did. I think most serious collectors are aware of Anthony's fraudulent listings and after work I will post one here that I believe is a total scam and I'm sure there are many more if one were to dig through their listings. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to be vigilant with these sellers and keep reporting bad items and posting images and links.

Not trying to be controversial here, or to seem like I'm defending ebay, but there is a very strong possibility that the negative feedback was removed per ebay's policy, as shown below, and there was nothing particularly unethical about them doing so.

Since we don't know what the wording of the negative feedback was, we really shouldn't be drawing conclusions as to whether it was ethical to remove it or not.

What we do know though is that the original poster's stream of consciousness/rant/complaint was a) without any images or links to the specific stamps that were deemed fake, b) without any Philatelic Foundation certificate numbers, and c) was, at times, nearly incoherent or incomprehensible.

So, maybe let us not summarily lynch ebay without knowing all the facts first?

Jim

Could anybody point to where the ebay "report item" choice for fake or misrepresented stamps is? I see things such as "avoiding ebay fees", "pornographic" yada yada yada.

Nope. That won't get the listing bounced. There is NOTHING in the listing that even remotely implies that the stamp is a fake.

The issue is that the stamp is not what it is claimed to be, which is a different issue.

If the minimum-wage drones processing these reports cannot confirm the issue (WITHOUT any philatelic knowledge), nothing will happen.

Once upon a time, you could add explanatory information to these reports, thus adding evidence or context, but once ebay removed that feature, it made the report function useless.

If there is not prima facie evidence that a lay person can see in the listing proving it is in violation, the report is ignored.

Report Item.
Scroll midway down any item to just below ebay's suggestions. On the left side is Description Shipping and Payments. On the right side is Report Item.

No way to properly report a stamp and unresponsive dead end.

It is comforting to know that counterfeit stamps are not allowed.

Given the way the libel laws work in the US, that comment is as it should be. I do not believe it is greed that motivates most of the decisions ebay makes about how to handle complaints against sellers. I believe their first concern is to avoid getting embroiled in litigation. Few complainants feeling the passion that comes from getting less than they expected, are able to stick with the facts and avoid heavy doses of opinion. Too bad. You can't win on the basis of opinion. Claiming that a company is acting illegally and proving it are two very different things.

I do not feel that saber rattling is going to be very productive in helping the next generation of hobbyists come to terms with the dangers of being less than expert in their understanding of the material they collect. There are no shortcuts. DO NOT TRY TO BUY WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW WELL. First get some philatelic education, then work your way into the complexities. In my experience its more fun that way for all concerned.
