In a previous thread, I posted some examples of 254 plate scratches https://goscf.com/t/58307#58307In that same thread, I posted some other examples which, at first, appeared to be just an ink blob. However, when I located many more examples in my collection, they can no longer be considered just one-offs. In this thread, I will post some other examples that show constancy (i.e., more than just one, unique example). The first example is what I would call, "Spider over D". I found three of these, all of which also contain a large diagonal plate scratch starting at the top, near the D, and down to the W in Two at the lower left. It is very possible that the Spider only appeared at the time that the plate scratch happened. I will only show one full stamp of each constant variety, followed by 2 or more closeups.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Nothing of note in my sparse Newfoundland stamps. |

Partime Thanks for this thread....very interesting as I own veryy few stamps from this intriguing Province of mine, Newfoundland.
One day, I am going to get into it, so I own more Provinces of Eastern Canada.

Quote: One of the listings is Newfoundland 254i. Can you tell me the difference from the regular green 254? My Unitrade says that 254i is the inverted watermark version of 254. You wouldn't be able to see any difference from the front. The best way to check is from the back, using watermark fluid, and compare against a normal stamp. Sorry, but I wasn't able to find one inverted watermark in the entire batch. I'd love to get one, if someone has an extra ... |

And thank you for your comments, Renden. I still have to put together a small study of the plate scratches, and I'll have quite a few extra when done. If you or anyone wants a copy or two of Scott 254 with a plate scratch, just send me an email through the system. They are probably relatively common, and considered trash by some, but to me they're something different, so collectible. |
