Red River - I don't own that cover. Just grabbed a random one from my image archive to post. I own the one in the exhibit (no, not for sale).

Lilley's Corner - I know. The "L" cancellation is fairly well known, but on cover is a rarity. Note that the "L" broke at some point during its life - the single has an example of the "broken L"

Lilley's Corners is now Old East London, or as the locals call it - EOA (East of Adelaide). Great area with interesting history & architecture. Was very run down, but now being revitalized, I know it well.

At least not now.

Here is a little postal history on a town in British Columbia called Merritt

The post card below has a Scott 89 with a cancel of Merritt, B.C. September 26, 1907 below...

Below is an old map of Merritt just South/West of Kamloops B.C.

Below is from " Canada Post Offices 1755-1895" by Frank W. Campbell..Interestingly. this book does not show Merritt B.C., but only Merritt Ontario as seen below.

Once known as Forksdale, the community adopted its current name in 1906 in honour of mining engineer and railway promoter William Hamilton Merritt...Born in Hamilton, Ontario 1867..

Postmaster was George B. Armstrong who was appointed to postmaster August 15.1907...In 1907, George B. Armstrong built Armstrong Department Store. It also served as the post office...Below is pictures of George B. Armstrong as a younger man and when he got older as shown below.

The post card above was mailed 40 days after it became a post office. (possible ERD)

Below is the actual Armstrong store the post office began it's journey...

The only trouble I have determining how rare or not rare this cancel is, I could not find the monetary usage of this post office..Any help would be appreciated.

Robert

Always of interest, Robert.
Looking at the Preface written by Campbell and understanding that his Book covered the 1755/1895, it would not seem unusual not to find Merritt, B.C. (1907). His book does show us a nice cancel from Merritt, ON, 1895.
I did not feel important to re-copy Campbell's page with the "cancel" from ON. Your point is well made.

This info to complement Robert's history and support it....

From Merritt Herald:

In 1907, George B. Armstrong built Armstrong Department Store. It also served as the post office. In 1910 the building that still stands today was built

Good additional information Rene...Still not sure how busy or how many people used this post office to indicate rarity.

If nobody collected the data out of this particular P.O., we will never know and I do not think that our Federal system ( Canada Post) would compile such info

Here is another cancel on a " Canada Post Card" with a date of May.9.1893 canceled at the York Street Substation...The interesting thing is how many of these Canada Post Cards from York Street office with a cancel 8 months after it opened have survived..Not an easy statistic to verify.

The York Street station was Established August.1.1892 and March.1.1901
The Postmaster assigned to this substation was F.W. Nye who controlled the station until it's closing.

Below is a list of the 20 substations in York (changed to Toronto)

For your information as of 1893 there were 8373 post offices created when Confederation began in 1867 as the picture below shows.

Here is one more example for new collectors...Remember when you get a mint stamp you know it comes from Canada Post..End of story.

When you get a used canceled stamp it has a history that usually you can chase down..Now you have to ask yourself, how rare or not rare is it

Below is a regular Scott C9..not too rare..Add O.H.M.S. and it is more rare...NOW add a red cancel..getting more and more rare.

I have sent a email to BNAPS asking what this cancel is, cause I have never seen one before..No reply as yet..Anyone know what this cancel is..Please let me know.

Robert
