Very nice presentation and food for thought!

Thanks steve123..Just wanted new and experienced stamp collectors to realize that cancels are a world of it's own..There is so much history in cancels...Yes, mint stamps are cool..but little history.

I will post more as I come across them, working on couple now.

Robert

Gilles le timbre..love that cancel.

Here is one more canceled stamp that has a history which may or may not influence the rarity of the stamp.

This is the town of Avonmore Ontario with the Avonmore cancel on a small queen dated May.11.1898 as shown below.

Avonmore is/was situated in the county of North Stormont Ontario as shown by the city limit sign below.

The picture below shows the County of Stormont as depicted in the 1800's

Below is the Deputy Postmaster.

Avonmore Ontario Postal history.

In 1842 a settler named John Hough moved to what is now Avonmore but named it "Hough Mills"..In 1864 when the post office was created, the Community renamed it "Avonmore"

The County of Stormont in 1870 had a population of 20 people...In 1880 it had climbed to 68 people...Even today the town has only 330 people.

By 1854, regular stagecoach service to Moulinette and Moose Creek had been established and a decade later, on April 1, 1864, the settlement received its first Post Office.

The first Postmaster was Elias Shaver

Information taken from the " Canada Post Offices 1755-1895" assigned a "00012" post office monetary income.

0 - Indicates lack or income or no record.
1 - Indicates less than $50.00 income.
2 - Indicates less than $100.00 income.

This does not leave room for more cancels than less considering that "Large Queen" stamps were still available to the post office.

Having said that, I would love to see other cancels from "Avonmore" on "Small Queens"

Robert

Robert,

here is a nice duplex cancel - Ottawa - on a Map stamp.....bought it because I loved it and now it is close to Southeastern Norway as I sent it to another special friend who loves "postmarks on stamps" !!

History:
1) Ottawa is the Capital of Canada, as Washington is for USA etc.
2) The duplex hammer (FYI) has 2 parts - a dater and a killer. The 1st duplex hammers were supplied by Berri (of London, England) in 1860, and they were popular for some time between 1893 and 1898.....after which squared circle cancellations were all in rage, but between 1898 and 1902, duplex again became popular. Rarity factors (Smythies) are omitted for several reasons.......and I will not get into that. (Ref: The Evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp........by R.B. Winmill)
3) Ottawa, ON duplex killer presents an "enclosed 1" + a number of thin bars (19).
Enjoy our great stamp history

René

Wert, I am quite impressed with the info provided. Where did you locate this hammer?

This may be the most valuable Canadian (sort of) cancellation (well, datestamp).

Stampless covers from this correspondence retail for a few hundred dollars without this datestamp. With it, about 30x more. There are about 10 examples (I've tracked down records of 9 of them, and there may be another).

C.

You can also link his Red River exhibit , which is really well done.

I first became aware of this material when a number of things came out in the Risvold sale in 2010. The material is so hard to find, that unless you are really looking for it, you won't see it.

Nice!

Still a work in progress. Will get a major revision it based on some comments from judges.

But to keep the thread on topic:

chipg..Good stuff buddy, do a deep write up and post it here for us to enjoy...chipg..That "lilley's corner" sub station is rarer than you think...Canada Post & Offices book by Frank W. Campbell shows usage as "000006" which is part of Middlesex...That means with the first 50 years they only made $500.00 to $750.00 for it's entire existence..If I had this cover, I would do an extreme deep history on it..Want to sell it..haha

Rene..I would love to own that cover.

Robert.
