Have been searching for info on the state of the Gum of New Brunswick (Province) cent stamps (Unitrade 6-11) - Unitrade mentions that most #6,7 and 8 have No Gum (NG)). What about 9,10 and 11 ??.
Have not found a "firm" article on the subject. Any help (with reference) would be very welcome !!

René

The 2 cent deep orange space has been filled since I scanned this Page.

It is evident that this Forum does not have this expertise and I figure this is normal for such a specialized collection. However, reading on the subject (ref: BNAPS)I do believe that all cent issues of New Brunswick were produced with gum. Unitrade Canada does not seem to have the ability to give a "strong" opinion except saying what I have written in my 1st post.....not a great help and it leaves "sellers" to write anything they wish....and demand $$$ they want for their stamp(s) !

here is my "proof" page

Gilles !!!!
Love to see your Connell proof (and all the varieties) - The problem I have is: I do not like the guy......but would gladly buy a cheap copy.......just to show the world, with history.

I hope you love your "proof", but not his face......hahahahahah !!
Thanks for posting - from Ottawa

...............................Robert, what re-entry are you referring to for the 11P ? Cheers !

René

I believe that I can answer the OP question, and its pretty interesting.

Apparently, after the Confederation with Canada, New Brunswick stamps were withdrawn from issue on 4/1/1868. These "remainders" were stored in the Custom House of Saint John (NB).

This building suffered a large fire in 1891. A large number of the "remainders" were still there. The heat had caused the old gum to soften and many of the stamps were found stuck together. To remedy this, they were soaked.

There were 1,2,5,10 and 12 1/2 and 17 cent stamps found. Probably owing to where they were stacked in the building, and which ones were exposed to the most heat: the 2c, 5c and to a lesser extent: the 1c are found without gum. The three higher denominations are more commonly found mint (with gum). All of this from the Argenti book on Nova Scotia & New Brunswick.

@ Robert, thanks for the scans....will be checking mine

@ txstamp, the St John Fire, if I remember well, has been mentioned in another thread (NBSTAMPER) but the source of info on the Gum vs NG stamp was never mentioned. Thanks ! Could you e-mail me more info on the Argenti book ? Appreciate

@ Blaamand, thanks for the kind words.....good to see your name on the Forum

On the fire - here is a link to NBSTAMPER's post: https://goscf.com/t/31266#266605

The book which I got the information from is:
The Postage Stamps of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
by Nicholas Argenti
published 1962 - 1976 reprint available
ISBN #0880000880

NBSTAMPER indicates that the fire was in 1877, the book says 1891, and specifically states that it was the Custom House in St John. Argenti's information would be dated to 1962, which was when his book was published.

edit: after some googling, I definitely see the June 20, 1877 great fire of St John, which apparently affected the Custom House. Argenti's date might be wrong - not sure of his source for it.

I agree with your change of date for the great fire of Saint John, New Brunswick, June 20, 1877. That date would be closer to our 1867 Confederation date and the fact that NB stamps were still in use after the confederation. At a certain point, NS and NB stamps were stowed. N.B. stamps were partly destroyed by the Saint John Fire.

btw I ordered the Argenti book - Thank You for contacting me, txstamp !

René - great, I'm happy to help.

This is a "stamp" and stamp production (essay, etc) book, which will complement the book on Postal History that you posted in the other thread. I have that one as well and they are a good pair.
