I was speaking to a stamp dealer today and he said that at one time he had a book which described the hand stamps used on revenue stamps by the patent medicine companies. I collect the private die stamps and I'm interested collecting hand stamps (on regular revenues) by those companies. Such a book would be very helpful resource. Does anyone know of anything like this?
I have two recommendations. One is George Griffenhagen's Private Die Proprietary Medicine Stamps, published by American Topical Association, a veritable bargain at $10 and available from Eric Jackson; the second was published by the American Revenue Association and was compiled by Howard Beaumont and is entitled Printed Cancels, 1862-1883 and is listed on Richard Friedberg's website for $35.00. Both of these focus on printed cancels, not handstamps. But should provide an excellent starting point on the general proprietary stamps used by the same firms.
Thanks for the info and link. I guess I am using the improper term. I'm interested in any cancels used by the M&M companies. Where they printed or hand stamped or both? It looks like the Boston book calls them a "surcharge".?
They were both. Regardless of what the Boston Book calls them they are really cancels. The printed cancels are generally more popular and more expensive.
