Five decades ago means that who knows how many might have been collectors are now not. Plus any young relatives who might have been enticed.

The thing is that if you look at the Morning Consult data Baby Boomers are in third place by no small margin behind Millennials and Gen Xers when it comes to collecting physical things. Women are half as likely to collect as men. I don't think given those numbers that you can draw an inference as to what may have been if something was different fifty years ago. It is interesting that more than half of Millennials that collect physical things collect NFTs.

PS:

Given the numbers of younger generations that collect physical things if philately even grabbed 1% of those it would mean collector numbers in the seven figures. So where are they and how do they engage in the hobby? They are out there.

It, literally,is what the caption says. I, however, have questions about the validity of that interpretation.
What the caption reads is

Quote:
Shares of respondents who said they collect either physical items or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) either as a hobby or investment.

I collect money: the more I can add to my collection, the better.
NFTs have been hyped as something you can gain a lot of money with. I would be very interested to know how many NFTs that are collected really are accumulated.

" I collect money " means nothing . I have a spare coin jar on my desk ,so maybe I collect money too.

The fun begins when the government is paying me 5.75% interest , at that rate I already quit buying stamps . Since the Fed's are paying out 691 Billion dollars in interest each year ,plus they are spending even more money next year. At that rate my days of buying stamps will have to wait .

I think a lot of older stamp collectors are thinking that $10,000 stamp collection they had since 2001 and now it is still a $10,000 collection the hell with that give me that $575 .00 a year ,then I will be better off with cash in a CD and the $575.00 and maybe more next year .
That is where we are at in the hobby right now .

Exactly. That was the whole point of that line.

People have been buying NFTs of the biggest crap ever produced and passed off as digital 'art'. They call themselves collectors after watching too many Tiktok videos of people telling them how they 'invested' in NFT and made a killing when selling the garbage. Those people accumulate stuff, anser yes to the question "Do you collect NFTs" but have no interest in collecting. They are just speculating their pile of junk will allow them to retire next month. And when it turns out it is worth nothing at all, they have an even stronger incentive to call it a collection.

Some of the data shown in the posted chart really require better definition of what was understood as "collect" by those who asked and those who answered questions.

I think the point of the chart is being missed. Replace "collect" with "acquire". What is done with the thing you purchase is irrelevant. The percentages of people by age and gender is the point. There are people on this forum that want a return on their stuff and others that don't care and some that are a mix. We don't pick some as "collectors" and discount others.

The main question is "Do you acquire "X"?

An old time collector who started in the 1930's a world wide collection and spent four decades colecting and servicing air mail flight covers was one of my early mentors when I joined the local stamp club after college in the mid 1970's. He was a batchelor without many relatives when he closed his albums in the late 1990's. His long standing advice was leaving a stamp collection for future collectors to enjoy was a lot better than leaving a room full of empty cigarette packs and beer cans. He always could, and did retire to his stamp room to visit his old friends and find hours of enjoyment with them.
