I've several low value [9 pies to 4 annas] George V Indian stamps without a discernable watermark [or parts thereof] - I've held them against a bright light, scanned them, used cigarette lighter fluid and a black background - but all to no avail. I've been informed that:
"Some of the Br. India 1911-22 GV de la Rue issue definitives do not show watermark, because of the spacing between two stars."
But have found no collaborating information.
Can anyone help in this matter?
regards
Tony

Tony, I suspect that if you have a look at a stamp "without a watermark" you may very well find a really tiny portion of the watermark tucked away in the margin: very difficult to see, and I can understand how they may be seen by some as being without a watermark. I don't think the geometry of the large star allows for a true impression without watermark?
I'm going to go away and cut up some spare KGV India and see if I can get one to fit in the unwatermarked space. |

Hi Tim It is not just one stamp - I've got five or six with exactly the same problem(???). Even though the watermark is a single star [SG #34] I cannot find on any of the stamps a portion of a star or even a straight line that would indicate one of the ten arms of the five pointed star.

Update: geometrically not possible, at least with my now ruined low value KGV stamps. I'd be interested to see if anyone else knows about this. |

Hi tonyowen, Could you please tell us where this information came from? Quote: "Some of the Br. India 1911-22 GV de la Rue issue definitives do not show watermark, because of the spacing between two stars." |

Yes, the quote is from Joy Daschaudhuri. But I've been unable to find other sources to confirm that quote. Stanley Gibbons state "We are unaware of any stamp from either of these sets" [George V]" which has a complete omission of the watermark."
and Delarue do not have anyone {at this time] that can sort their archives.
I tried emailing Joy Daschaudhuri for clarification, but the forum would not allow this.
Hence this second posting asking for collaborating information.

Five or six copies of something so unusual that it's unknown to SG? Surprising, to say the least. Could you post some scans, front and back? |

I'll try. Do you want high res ie 1200 or what?
More to the point is clarification/enlargement/collaboration of Joy Daschaudhuri's statement

Images of five stamps at 600dpi are attached [only have 300, 600 & 1200] 01 is the front, 02 is the back without black cover, 03 is the back with black cover. Please remember I have not said there is no watermark only that I cannot detect a watermark or part threreof. For the record, I've tried holding the stamp(s) to the light and seeing fully through the stamp, both front and back; scanned at 1200 & subsequently manipulated using both PS and Gimp; lighter fluid on back of stamp sitting on glass over black cover; and moving, twisting and tilting stamp under light My other Indian stamps of the same era and similar condition clearly show a watermark or part thereof. For the record I'm also using a magifying glass and 8x lupe (loupe) regards Tony |

I can see a wmk bottom right hand stamp (star) Are you sufficiently cleaning your stamps? There appears paper still adhered to the back ?
