Bcantin, you noticed my favorite Australian stamp that I own! A little tribute to rod222 for taking such an active interest in everyone's posts.
The labels in question were most likely placed in the album I found them in around 1915-1925. I say this because the 1901-1920 album they were in was owned by a person who was born in 1903 and appears to have filled his album with stamps and covers he obtained as an active collector. Just an assumption but there are only a few stamps here and there that were from the early 1920s and nothing more recent.
Even if we don't identify the label in question, I'm still learning a lot from reading how you guys approach the task. Thank you for that. |

Kelump - that's a very useful piece of information! Thanks for adding that, then we can definitely add Korea to the list of possible countries, because they were still using Kanji on all paperwork prior to 1945.
So, then - we can probably eliminate China as an issuing entity thanks to Rod's comment regarding their lack of presence in the Bohannon catalogue. (I really need to get that book!) That leaves Japan and Korea, with a slim possibility that these tamps are from another country that used Chinese - i.e., Malaya/Straits Settlements, Hong Kong, Macao... But I am still leaning toward Japan or Korea because of the "font" used for the character...
So, if this is Japanese - it is not a government-issued postal seal. Hasegawa confirmed that, for both domestic and international damaged letters. But manufacturer's seal - that's a good possibility. I'll do more research as I can but the only book I have on Korea is the "Korea Revenue Stamps Catalogue", produced The Corea Cinderellas Collecting Club. I will try to find someone in the club I can contact for any help with this...

Quote: but how fascinating that you chose an Australian stamp with a San Francisco postmark! First time in 20 odd years, I have seen a US Postmark on a Kangaroo A very generous free gift from SCF member "Calstamp" 2021 |

Appears so, Supplement No 11. I have not seen any other production thus far.

That's awesome, thanks for the info! A couple years ago, I started collecting catalogues of all kinds... and this is exactly the sort of thing I need. Thank you so much for that! Cheers! |

Now that is interesting for two reasons. I see our character in the top row, center (in violet). It is also written in the curvy, old style "font" that the original stamp used. And second, as you pointed out, we can add to the mix with Manchukuo - the Hasegawa catalogue does list a few pages of Manchukuo revenues (listed under "Manchuria" in English) but no seals or anything other than the general revenues. I was using an older edition (5th) which I have electronically but I also have the seventh edition someplace that I can't access at the moment so it would be interesting to see if the Manchukuo coverage is a little more extensive.
The Hasegawa catalogue is also called "Narumi no Katalogo", in case you have it - the seventh edition might have something additional. I'll look for mine tonight.
Good thinking, Rod - leave no stone unturned! |

I have written to 2 China bloggers No response We get spoilt here on SCF, usually immediate replies.
And I have just left Facebook ONEPS (Turkey) after months of trying, I still fail to understand the facebook style how to reply, when posts were made, it's all a jumble Horrible experience.
SCF is just a fabulous forum No wonder it is the fastest expanding stamp forum on the internet

Rod - agreed. Although in my case I haven't been on here in a couple days so I missed tour reply until this morning.
Facebook style: I hate that jumble. It defaults to "Most relevant" but there seems to be no logic behind what is "relevant". Where you see "Most relevant", change to "all replies" or something like that. Facebook is finding newer and better ways to make their product worse.
I am also waiting on my Japanese friend to show his grandmother the stamp to see if she can think of anything else.
This absolutely is a wonderful forum, I don't know why I haven't been on here until last year... I have always had an obsession with these little pieces of paper, at least since I was three years old. |

"Facebook is finding newer and better ways to make their product worse." Sounds like every "update" to the computers at work.. I've changed the term to "downdate" due to all of the "deprovements". I've searched some more websites looking for similar items on covers and sent a few emails but haven't had any success. I tried google search for the image in the corner and they showed me a bunch of rugs and carpet. |
