Anyway, the cost of the cert is more than the value of the item, so sending such items for certification isn't seen by most collectors as very rational.

Yet a look through the various websites of the expertizing groups will show many such items, often (but not always) in the mistaken belief that they are something rare.

That is why I carefully said "... most collectors ..."

I have no idea what it's worth since there are no prior sales recorded, at least for the past ten years. As I have said before, there are covers with stamps worth pennies which are sold and bought regularly. All recorded in various places, ebay and otherwise. So, either these are being sold as something other than what they are, or they are rare. There should be a sale somewhere. Every stamp on a cover is collected by someone.

The booklet pane (used or otherwise) is somewhat valuable, but what about a single stamp? It's value is listed as mint for $275 - $300 on The Swedish Tiger. The pane itself has recorded sales of $150 - $500. So, what is a single used stamp worth then? $15? $10? And on this point, you haven't answered my question. Is there another example of a stamp worth something which translates to a cover that is "worth just a $1"? BTW, I never said it had significant astronomical value. Just value.

And, BTW John, since you believe this a $1 box item, I would think you would be more than willing to put it up on ebay starting at .99. If you are correct, no one will buy it. If I am correct, you will have a happy sale of what you thought was a $1 box item. Win/win, don't you think? If you do, please post the link so we can follow along!

Hac - I think you are missing the point. 279Bk is a listing for a booklet pane. Not a single stamp. A booklet pane. It is Red and Type IV with a horizontal watermark. A single stamp is not a booklet pane. A single stamp is a 279B which is Red and Type IV and can be found with both horizontal and vertical watermarks. The value of a mint 279B is $9 and used it is 40 cents. Why the difference? It is not a booklet pane. If you remove a single from a 279Bk you now have a 279B.

PS: The Swedish Tiger often causes confusion and is not a great reference IMO.

PSS: Here are 479 listings on ebay for 279B. These are single and multiples that are not booklet panes.

Rodgcam, thank you. This fully explains it. I was going off information that I didn't fully understand. Thanks for the help.

hac5x3,
My cover is in my collection and I have no desire to sell it regardless of price. I am not the one seeking a current market value. You want to find a price, sell yours. I think I'm just about done here since there seems to be no convincing you of the reality of the marketplace. At some point we all tire of beating our heads against the wall when you do not grasp the realities of the marketplace.
