Any info about the portugese colonies in India. I have some stamps and I would like to know more about them. Where do I have to go to find info about Indian stamps.
Portugal has had a presence in India since 1502. During the era of postage stamps Portuguese India (PI) constituted the area around Goa, the island of Diu, Daman, Dadra & Nagar & Haveli. In 1954 Dadra (July 21) then Nagar & Haveli (Aug. 2)were occupied by Indian Nationalist groups ending Portuguese rule there. This area was not annexed by India until August 1961. So keep in mind Scott 1-529, were used before the lost.
So starting with Scott 530 PI was limited to the Goa region, Damoa & Diu Island. These territories were occupied by India on Dec. 19, 1961 then on March 16, 1962 when the remaining portions of Portuguese India were officially annexed by India. So this would include Scott's 530-618.
Portugal would continue to issues stamps form the former territory and are not listed in Scott's. Portugal did not recognize the annexation until 1974
Portugal kept issuing cindrella issues after 1962. Being in denial didnt help their stamps get status. Portugal were the only colonists that had to be be beaten out with a stick. the others realized their game was up and left willingly.
Portugal has always, until Macau, needed to be beat with a stick until they acknowledge they were no longer welcome or no longer in control, Timor, Angola & Mozambique to mention a few!
I am totally amazed at the street routes and how they are paved along the avenida stores/shops/restaurants of Macau. It's like strolling through euoropean paved bricked streets like Geramany, France and Italy.
That's how great the influence of the Portugese still exists on the old streets of Macau
