No one has stated that they disagree with me. cant you read? I have many times. now stop forcing your opinion down other peoples throat. you have said what you wanted to. if they want to agree with you they will. if they dont want to they wont. an uncanceled stamp will never be used. you are the only one who says that and the only one who ever will say that. no other member in the forum with any credibility will call an uncanceled stamp used or behave in the disgusting manner that you are doing for the past few days. Get a life. |

Quote: Understood..........but...the claim here is that an uncanceled item sent throught the mail can be described as being in MINT CONDITION !
It can not be considered Mint... My quote is taken from the APS.. If the stamp was intended to be used Thru the postal system,..it is used, whether it is cancelled or not. |

I read somewhere years ago people used to soak gum off mint stamps from some countries where it became brittle or was practically destroying the stamps. What are such stamps called? Mint, no gum, or unused no gum or what? I have seen the abbreviation MNG used in adds, auctions etc. and on this website I peruse for philatelic abbreviations: http://www.stampshows.com/stamp-abbreviations.html |

BeeSee......
They are properly described as unused, no gum.......some refer to them as mint no gum........but that is incorrect....without original gum those suffering the loss of gum are no longer mint.
Proper definitions have existed for many years but they are distorted and used erroneously by non-collectors, sellers wishing to entice uneducated collectors, and cross-overs from other hobbies such as some coin collectors. The use of the word "error" is another prime example......I also cite the erroneous use of the word "rare". Many collectors have based their collecting habits on false information and when they try to sell they are told that the collection has no value. They generally claim the hobby is to blame but in reality their lack of education is the problem. This is why I vehemently oppose anyone who makes false claims concerning the hobby.
These are not just "my opinions" but well established definitions that were established long before I became a collector.

Spock as soon as you lick a stamp and place it on an envelope it is used,it is the act of sticking it to the cover intended for mail transportation that makes it used and not the cancellation from the post office, that's just part of the process and I do tend to agree with Tom on this Spock. Just my two cents worth Harry |

I guess then that MNG can only be used to describe stamps that are issued without gum, such as some of the revolutionary Chinese issues or even some of the 1992 Lithuania post Soviet Union issues, which I do have. |

I agree BeeSee......there are occasions where MNG is correct (from many countries) generally MNG should be followed by ai....as issued. |

Quote: I read somewhere years ago people used to soak gum off mint stamps from some countries where it became brittle I also read, that some collectors will soak the gum off the stamps due to the acid content in the gum !! |

BeeSee & Bobgggg.....
This is one reason there is the proliferation of re-gummed material on the market that is offered as original gum material. Collectors that can't tell the difference or that don't bother having some material certified will be extremely disappointed when they try to re-sell...........another reason to develop a better philatelic education for ourselves......and to help prevent the spread of false information.

As to education of collectors, of which I agree is the key to successful and satisfying collecting, I think posters with pictures would be a good idea. Good for displays at stamp shows, in stamp stores, at home in the stamp room, etc. Doctors have posters in their offices trying to educate people about various aspects of different conditions and people like pictures. Stamp collectors like pictures of stamps. A picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures can hit you in the gut emotionally and you will remember emotional stuff more readily than non-emotional. It is hard to remember all the stuff one is supposed to 'know' sometimes. Some days are better than others too. Decisions, decisions. Does anyone make stamp posters now? I haven't looked. Better to spend the money on stamps. |
