I would've overlooked this cover except for the Linn's article that was included with it in the glassine. The Feb 5, 1990 article, by Wayne Youngblood, explains some of the background of the red fluorescent cancel and it's apparent scarcity due to the short duration of use.

The cancel does fluoresce brightly under short wave.

I'm thinking it's an ebay item, but would like to know more about it if anyone on SCF can shed additional light on it.

Thank you in advance.

Interesting piece of modern postal history. Let us know if/when you decide to list it.

The USPS experimented with purple machine cancels for a couple years in the 1980s. They stopped apparently when it was found the ink was easy to wash off. The fluorescent red cancel is interesting and unusual.

How bizarre. By the time the mail piece is faced to be canceled with a fluorescent ink, it no longer needs anything fluorescent on it for facing purposes. No wonder it was a failed experiment.
