That thought occurred to me as well.

The second photo is not a standard inexpensive CDV, but rather a tin-type sandwiched between the die-cut front and a partial paper slip glued onto the back to hold it all together.

I have seen plenty of tintypes with three cent stamps paying the tax. The design might well increase the value.

In the mail today came my used copy of "Exposing America: Photograph's from August 1, 1864 through July 31, 1866", and the author David Horton seems to imply that the value of the tax stamp on the back may not be based on just the price of the photograph, but also if the customer bought a small frame or case to put the photo in. Was it just the photograph itself that was subject to the tax, or anything else purchased from the photographer related to the photo, anybody know for sure?

I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't look it up right now.

So the 5 cent tax got good comments. Here is another rather large or expensive photo with 5 cents paid by a 2c + 3c rather than a single nickle.

Smaller format, but you can see where this was an expensive piece. Also, extremely unusual to see this many 4-centers used in this manner.

That last is certainly a rare usage.

Here's another CDV I just picked up yesterday. It isn't that easy finding photographer precancels that are bold and readable, they are usually too faint to read and/or off center, this one isn't too bad, the centering is decent and you can see the "THOS. CU...NGS" of the photographer's name at the top, and also LANCASTER, PA. at the bottom. The date is very readable too.
