I bought a collection of the Republic of Panama at an online auction recently. It touted that it started with Scott no. 8. Here is number 9. Say hello to "Frankenstamp". This used stamp catalogs in at $1.25. Why would anybody go to such lengths to "repair" the tear.

Somebody who loved stamps?
I have done that, when I began collecting, I thought most of the older stamps I had were rare, I didn't realise how many gadzillions of them, there were.

I once swapped some stamps from a fellow in Hong Kong, he sent me the most disgusting, rotting, rust infested ripped and torn, they were unbelievable, I didn't want to even touch them.
Then I thought and forgave, perhaps he was a newbie, perhaps that was all he knew, that was all he had. You never really know. The stamps were that bad, I think if he was a genuine collector he wouldn't have suffered the embarassment of such a selection.
Generally speaking most stamps are only a few cents, so what the heck. I have also had the the other end of the scale, stunning serpentines from Finland, and an First Flight cover that was very valuable.
People always surprise, one way or another.

Thanks to Prince Afa's comments I checked, I don't have that stamp. I have SG8 with differing framework, It has the castellations, or battlements style very reminicent of the early French stamps. It is amazing how many countries copied the French and British early filagree work. |

That is high praise coming from HRH Spock. Rod, you have a point. The 2 centesimos and 50 centesimos of that series have different borders. Scott doesn't even indicate that the 2 centesimos stamp have different border designs from the others. So I have come to the conclusion, cataloging my recent Panama purchase. I have a lot of stamps. I have been putting them in date order in stock pages until I can get some album pages printed. Edit: If anyone (Rod, for example) wants an image of a few of these, just let me know. |

Thinking aloud: those lines bordering the 2c and the 10c suggests these stamps were initially intended to be imperforate. The isthmus of panama is 50Km at it's narrowest point. Balboa (on a rumour) heard of a "great sea" over the mountains, he took 25 days to cross the isthmus, and find and name the "South Sea" Magellan later named it "The Pacific" That must have been some trek, esp with the mosquitoes etc. Not sure where I got this, I think I cut it from a magazine advertisement perhaps. But it's rather neat. |

I most certainly wish Panama had issued the Columbus set, as I find them quite attractive. One reason it may have taken Balboa 25 days to cross the isthmus was because he was doing a portage of sorts. He brought his ships with him over the continental divide. |

Hi smauggie,
Ecuador released a set with the same design. Scott never listed them until the 2011 catalog. The Scott numbers are:

and the values are:
338A 5c ultra and black 338B 10c orange and blue 338C 40c dark carmine and red 338D 1S blue green and red 338E 2S violet and red
C38A 5c ultra and red C38B 10c brown and black C38C 50c green and red C38D 1S carmine and blue C38E 2S gray green and red
The stamps were issued October 13, 1935 and were on sale until October 30.

Glad you posted those unissued designs Rod, or I would have been totally flummoxed by these. |
