I have the same book, and it's "provenance," not "providence." The latter comes from our Creator. |

Until my post, I really had no idea how rare this stamp is. I am helping a elder person who has quite a collection of stamps, among other things and is ready to consolidate some of the estate. Reading all these posts, I really hope it is real, but it sounds like the odds are definitely not in that favor, unless it is one of the known ones. I really don't know. Like I said, this person does not do anything Internet, but has always been honest and trustworthy. I know a heart will be broken if it is a counterfeit. I've seen the stamp and number on the back, but don't remember the number, but is sounds like a good forgery would have a number.I thank all the supporters and honesty and will follow through to this group as I find out more. |

I think its a great gesture trying to help the guy out and you came to the right place. As much as the odds are leaning in the wrong direction its possible and I would want to be part of the whole deal just to see how it goes. You will definatly need the right auction house who will likely ask for details and maybe high res scans but if it is legit they may just come to you rather than the other way around. Keep us posted as you go and I'm I bet he has some other gems if all pans out. I did read that the extent of forgeries were great even to the point of surgical removal of the center on an angle to invert and replace so not to be detected. |

Heh when I was a kid I used to try that with the Seaway stamp. I fooled a few people some of the time but most people none of the time. |

If I can be serious for a moment...what does CATALOG VALUE have to do with stamps like the inverted jenny...do the multi millionaires tell each other "look the stamp catalogs for this " ? |

I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of them chuckle and say: "I'm the one who caused the catalog value to increase from $XX,XXX to $XXX,XXX."
But seriously, yeah I would guess that catalog values don't mean much to buyers of those high end stamps. The big auction houses sure love to provide estimate sales values, though. I'm not sure the buyers of high end items really pay attention to that either. I mean, do they bother to check their bank account to see if they have enough money to cover the sum of the estimates? It's unlikely to be a problem. |

Catalog value means something, but condition means everything. A Jenny might go anywhere from $150,000-$500,000 or possibly more if it happens to be one of the few really well centered examples and perfectly sound. It is true that there are only a few positions that are missing at this point, and two are from a block that was stolen decades ago and broken up (two have been recovered). On the other hand, position 13 was just sold a year or so back after not being seen for decades, so they do show up occasionally. |

That's true. Occasionally the buyer is "anonymous", so the public doesn't really know where the inverted Jenny went after it was sold. They do pop up. We'll see (hopefully). k |

I just stuck mine in the mount upside down. Looks pretty cool like that and saved me a quarter-mill |

Robey was also not intimidated when the postal inspectors came to his house and demanded the inverted "Jenny" sheet. |
