There was plenty of publicity about the Jenny, too. The postal inspectors were at Robey's door in very short order but he refused to show it to them. Anyone who has not read Jenny by George Amick is missing a fine book on the subject.

Reading all these posts, I really hope it is real, but it sounds like the odds are definitely not in that favor, unless it is one of the known ones. I really don't know. Like I said, this person does not do anything Internet, but has always been honest and trustworthy. I know a heart will be broken if it is a counterfeit.

When I read this I tend to believe that this is for real and not a troll posting.

Susan, I really hope that it is genuine and I admire your efforts in helping these people.

It would be a great boon for this site if in someway we had any input in shining some light on an American Philatelic Icon.

Thanks for the tip Rev. Collector, I will put that on my must read list. What a fascinating story. I have heard of the Inverted Jenny of course, but know nothing of the story behind it. What I can assume from the last few posts is that the original buyer of sheet was contacted by our postal service who was asking for it back. What country is this? It was not the buyer fault they printed stamps in error. I'll have to check that book out. As far as the original topic, my answer would be, do some research, select an auction house contact them, tell what you have. I am sure they would guide you as far getting it authenticated. I hope it is real, and the owner gets top dollar. Good luck.

You can get a lot of the story in the auction catalog I referenced earlier:

When you have collected all of your life I guess you have a reason to be skeptical, as most "treasures" turn out to be much less than a treasure. However, I have seen some ordinary people have some extra ordinary and very rare stamps. I for one hope that she has found a treasure and that this story is true and not just someone playing with us. I am a member of The Collectors Club in Minnesota and have seen some amazing things. After a former member, Floyd Risvold passed away at the young age of 98 his collection brought over 15 million at auction. Amazing collections are out there in private hands. I knew the guy that once owned the Sweden 3 skilling orange. Not every rarity is in the hands of museums, millionaires or investors. You have to dream a little in this hobby and have faith that it could happen to you, and yes I buy powerball tickets when it gets over 100 million.

Great read. I was a little amused to learn that the plate block is "lightly hinged." Who'd a thunk that!

A picture and some evidence of the stamp existing is due now, methinks.

Was it in the movie Brewsters Millions that Richard Pryor, to receive a much larger estate, had to spend a $1m in a month and have nothing to show for it? One of the things he did was attach an inverted Jenny to a normal letter and post it.

I had a similar situation. However, it turned out to be just a partial invert.
