Does anyone know how to identify the #595 2 cent Washington perf. 10 Scott cat. value $425. There are so many variations of this and I have several but I don't want to accidentally give away a rarity! Thanks

GOOD QUESTION! I was wondering the same thing a few days ago. For the posts surely to follow -- Edit -- I think you mean perf 11 |

My Scott doesn't give the dimensions of #554, but, being a flat plate printing, it should be narrower. |

The 595 will have the same design dimensions as the common coil stamp scott#599. It is wider than the 554, wider than the 634 & 634A, but the same as the 579. You have to be careful if the stamp has one straight edge, because the 554 booklet pane stamp sometimes has a wide appearance. The easiest measuring stick is to take a 599 coil and cut it in half crossways. Keep one handy for quick reference. After you've looked at about 10,000 of them, you can tell with reasonable certainty without measuring :)

The 595 is coil waste from the 599 coil stamp. It was waste from the web prior to the coil perf operation. The web was cut into panes of 170 and perforated on the flat plate perf 11 perforators. Waste produced after the coil perforation was the 579 perf 11x10. These stamps were printed on the small Stickney rotary presses and measured 19.75mm X 22.25mm. The 583 and 634 were printed on the large Stickney rotary presses and measured 19.25mm X 22.5mm. The 554 was printed on the R. Hoe flat plate presses and measured 18.5-19mm X 22mm. |

You're right - I looked at the wrong stamp when posting, it is perf. 11 I don't have 10,000 of them but after a few hundred I think my head will be ready for a rest anyway. |

I thought that I found one after going through 100's of them but it has a straight edge so now I'm unsure because of the info posted by chasa...god grief has this stamp been avoiding me lately! Thank you however for the information as I would have never known otherwise! I used the search function so I'm well aware this post is from 2011. So whaddaya think? It does have a line across the top after-all? I'll have to re-check the eye suppose? |

The design should have exactly the same dimensions as the 'coil perforated 10 vertically' pictured above. The line across the top would rule out 595 and suggest 554. |

Sweet thanks for the info. I knew it wrong as soon as I started searching SCF and reading the threads. I have over 100 perf 11's but, of course they're all flat plate. I do have another candidate however that I'll have to measure after the little one gets on the school bus. It's picture day ya' know! lol Thank you for all the information, I really needed it especially the dimensions in mm's. |

Why then does the chart above from 1847usa.com show different dimensions for the 595 and 599? I sent an email to Bob Allen asking him about this. |
