Hi Robert,
Folks have invested time in this thread and it has some good content; and I would hate to have to remove it. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and we can move on.

Here is another semi rare cancel

It is from the post office of Lake Megantic, Quebec
The stamp is a 3 cent Small Queen.
Dated: September.3.1895

Picture where Lake Megantic is in the Province of Quebec.

Old map of lake Megantic

Close up of Lake Megantic

Here is more post office information.

Here is the domestic rate (Thanks to BNAPS)

Remember these stamps came out for service from 1870-1889.
These 3 cent stamps were not exclusively for domestic delivery, but might be used for parcels..So they had a limited amount of usage.

And also Large Queen stamps were still around and Jubilee came out in 1897 and would/could be used also..

These stamps with the Lake Megantic cancel MAY BE rarer than we think..If anyone else has this cancel, please post it.

Also the " Canada Post Offices 1755-1895" book says the usage is designated as 00012..."0" means no usage or lost information..The number "1" designates less than $50.00 for the year...The number 2 designates $50.00 to $100.00 for the year.

Love your work Robert. This will inspire me to start something similar for New South Wales cancels, when I can free up some more time!

These are Straight Jack Flag cancels. Not worth much off-cover but worth from $100-$200 on cover or front. I bought these on ebay for a dollar but I don't think anyone knew much about them. I have a cover but paid about $150 for it. The front below was about $100 plus auction fees.

I do like the cancels and postmarks on SQ's and have a bunch. The GOTTINGEN STREET post office from Halifax is a favourite.

Very nice 3 cent small queen....This is a very uncommon cancel..Below is some information on your cancel.

1835 map of Halifax

This is GOTTINGEN STREET

Here is information on post office and postmaster.

Jimjung cancel to me is quite rare.
To prove the fact, can anyone post another..I dont have one..We woud like to know how rare it is.

BTW as per my first post..I would like some one to post not only a "Coulson" cancel, but a "Coulson" cancel on an 1898 Map Stamp.

I also like looking for cancels. Here is one I like on a small queen:

Westham Island, British Columbia. This office was only open 1 October 1891 to 1 December 1919. It is assigned a rarity factor D (closed - harder to find, but not rare).

Westham Island is in the mouth of the Fraser River, south of Richmond.

And I don't have a Coulson example.

The examples in this thread show that cancels can be rare for a number of reasons. The post office might be very small and open for only a short while. The post office might be large, but the device was only in use for a short while. The stamp itself might have been rarely used in that location.

The only way to know is by research, but this information can be hard to find. The books edited by William Robinson cover the western provinces and give a rarity factor from A (common) to E (rare). As an example of one that is rarity factor E (closed - rare, usually less than 10 reported) is the following:

Urquhart, Alberta Territory. Post office only open 1 November 1895 to 30 April 1906. You won't find this location on Google.

And ultimately the status of a cancel can change overnight. What might be considered extremely rare today could change tomorrow if someone discovers a trunk full of covers in an attic.

Yes Jan and Don

You are correct that if more are found it becomes less rare and how long it was used, etc. etc.

That is why posting, may bring other stamps out of the attic trunks.

Here is a nice cancel Jan ??.1854 from Fredericton New Brunswick.
all the pictures below are from Fredericton for the period 1850's
